Private / Independent Speech and Language Therapist / Therapy, covering Somerset and surrounding counties (including Bath, Frome, South Bristol, Yeovil, Trowbridge)

Finding the right support for your child can be a bit of a daunting task.  There follows some information about how I may be able to help you and your child.  You are welcome to contact me if you'd rather talk through your needs (details below).

Parent support - Having led a number of parent groups and worked with many parents of children who have communication difficulties on an individual basis, I am aware that when a child has speech and language difficulties, it can lead to a whole range of emotions for parents, including stress, anxiety, guilt, frustration.  These emotions are all understandable and they also need some exploring as they can get in the way of enjoying your child and of you enjoying your role as a parent.  The approach I take is holistic in the sense that I recognise my role in supporting parents emotionally and practically.  Emotional support is an integral part of the service I offer to parents and children.  On a practical level, I work to strengthen the strategies that parents have, so that they are able to adapt what they do, and meet the specific language and communication needs their child has.

What age is a good age? The research evidence shows us that early intervention is beneficial - though children of any age benefit from having programs and strategies to support their communication.  I am more than happy to work with very young children, supporting the earliest signals of communication difficulties - right up to teenagers and everything in between.

What about children with tricky behaviour? The adaptive approach I offer can be tailored to suit all children - including those with quirky characters, those who are not yet ready to follow table-top and structured activities and those with challenging behaviours.  I value the challenge of working with such diverse and exciting children and helping them to achieve their potential, in close partnership with those involved in the child's life on a daily basis.

So, what do I do?

Sadly, there are no magic wands in this job.  As I'm sure you've already discovered, helping a child with additional speech, language and communication needs means extra work.  As a Speech and Language Therapist, my role is to help build a clear picture of your child's communication strengths and needs - this is achieved through assessment.  Good assessment is the first step to good therapy.  A good assessment will allow us to decide what targets will be beneficial for the child - what do they need to be able to do now, in order to master a skill they   need to learn.  This leads us on to quality therapy - choosing the right therapy and being willing to adapt the therapy as we learn new information about the child.  Good therapy is well targeted and is able to respond and adapt in the light of experience.  The experience I have, ability to listen to parent's views and understanding of child development help me to provide good quality assessments and therapy - ensuring the best outcomes for children.
